A Simple Valentine’s DIY Activity for Toddlers
Valentine’s Day is often filled with hearts and decorations, but for little children, it’s a wonderful chance to learn something even more important — kindness and love through actions.
At Li’l Miracles International Preschool, we believe values are best learned through small, everyday experiences. This easy DIY activity helps toddlers understand that love is not just something we say, but something we do.
What Is the Love & Kindness Jar?
It’s a simple jar where your child collects paper hearts every time they do a kind act. Over time, the jar fills up with “love,” making kindness visible and exciting for little ones.
Toddlers may not fully understand Valentine’s Day, but they definitely understand hugs, sharing, and helping — and that’s exactly what this activity celebrates.
What Your Child Learns
This activity may look simple, but it supports important early development:
Empathy – Understanding how their actions make others happy
🗣️ Emotional expression – Learning positive social behavior
🔢 Early math skills – Counting the hearts at the end
👨👩👧 Family bonding – Shared moments of appreciation
Materials You’ll Need
- An empty jar, box, or container
- Red, pink, or white paper
- Crayons or sketch pens
- Stickers (optional)
- Glue or tape
No fancy supplies needed — just love and a little creativity!
Steps to do it.
Step 1: Decorate Your Love Jar
Sit with your child and let them decorate the jar with scribbles, stickers, or even tiny handprints.
Say with excitement:
“This is our special Love Jar!”
Giving the jar a name makes toddlers feel connected and proud of their creation.
Step 2: Make Kindness Hearts
Cut out small heart shapes from coloured paper and keep them in a small bowl near the jar. These hearts will be added throughout the week.
Step 3: Add a Heart for Every Kind Act
Whenever your child does something kind, appreciate them and add a heart to the jar together.
Some toddler-friendly examples of kindness:
- Sharing toys
- Helping pick up things
- Giving hugs
- Saying “thank you”
- Making a drawing for someone
Use simple phrases like:
“That was such a kind thing to do. Let’s add a heart!”
This positive reinforcement encourages them to repeat the behaviour.
Step 4: Count the Love
At the end of the week, sit together and count all the hearts in the jar.
You can say:
“Look at all the love you shared this week!”
This becomes a sweet learning moment and builds your child’s confidence.
A Gentle Parent Tip
At this age, children understand actions more than words. When kindness is noticed and celebrated, they begin to connect good behavior with happy feelings — both for themselves and others.
That’s how empathy begins.
Make It Extra Special
To wrap up Valentine’s week:
- Talk about the kindest moment your child remembers
- Take a picture with the filled jar
- Let your child give one paper heart to each family member
It’s a small activity with a big message — love grows when we share it.
